Northeast Michigan McKinney-Vento Homelessness Assistance

Servicing McKinney-Vento and Families in Transition Program-related requests for Alpena, Alcona, AMA-ESD, Atlanta, and Hillman Public Schools

Know Your Rights!

  • Homeless youth are entitled to school enrollment

  • You do not need a permanent address to enroll a child in school

  • Keeping enrollment in your home school is best whenever possible

  • Lack of immediate access to school records or other documentation cannot prevent school enrollment

  • You cannot be denied transportation to and from your home school when feasible

  • You have the right to participate in all extracurricular activities and programs for which you are eligible

  • Tutoring services may be available upon request.

The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act defines homelessness as “individuals who lack a fixed, regular and adequate nighttime residence.


This definition includes those who:

  • Live in emergency transitional shelters

  • Live in a motel, hotel, trailer park, campground, or

  • abandoned in hospital

  • Live in cars, parks, public places, bus or train

  • stations, or abandoned building

  • Living with relatives/friends due to eviction/fire

  • Migratory children living in these conditions

Definition of Homeless

The Families in Transition (FIT) Program offers a number of services to assist those struggling with homelessness.

 

These services include:

  • Immediate school enrollment

  • Coordination of educational and social services

  • Provision of essential school supplies and clothing

  • Assistance with educational and transportation

  • challenges

  • Referral assistance for younger siblings for potential

  • Early Childhood Programs

Alcona, Atlanta or Hillman Public Schools: MV Liaison, Admission Staff, School Counselor or Success Worker
